MSA First Year Representative Elections

2023-2024

First Year Representative Candidate Profiles

Amir Abdelbaky

Salam! My name is Amir Abdelbaky and I’m studying Business and Arabic here at UNC. I enjoy playing basketball and ping pong. With my experience as high school MSA president, I aim to make this year’s freshman class as active and unified as possible. I’ve tried my best to be involved in the MSA and that is because I genuinely believe that it is the best organization on campus. By voting for me as freshman representative, I hope to contribute to the MSA and allow the freshman class to build long-lasting friendships with each other. Thank you for reading this and Assalamualaikum.

Aliza Abdul

Hi! I am Aliza Abdul and ethnically Pakistani. My major is radiologic science. I have had previous exposure to leadership positions through Phi Theta Kappa, and Beta Club, and was a part of a peer mentor program. I am a hardworking individual who likes sweets, and my favorite color is blue. I love fashion and express myself through my clothes. I believe I would be right for freshman rep because a lot of my prior experience would help me create unique events. Also, I would help the first-year class get closer and expose them to different cultures. I would like to get our community involved and create a happy environment where people can be themselves.

Dana Abu-Jaradeh

My name is Dana Abu-Jaradeh and I am from Apex, North Carolina. I am Palestinian-American. I am planning to major in dental hygiene. I am very passionate about becoming involved with the Muslim community. I was president of my high school MSA and I am currently a lead within the Apex Mosque Youth Subcommittee where I help plan events for the youth and am specifically responsible for workshops. I love working with Muslim children and routinely volunteer at Islamic Sunday, summer, and pre-schools.

Aminah Imran

Salaam! My name is Aminah, and I'm a Journalism major from Concord. To me, being the Freshman Representative doesn't mean being part of Shurah, it means getting involved in the Muslim community again. I was always deeply integrated in the community no matter where I was, but as time went on, I found that was no longer the case. I've since been doing my best to rebuild that sense of community, but none of my efforts could compare to being the MSA Freshman Rep. This position would launch me back into the place I've always felt the most comfortable, and as your representative on Shurah, I would do everything in my power to make sure the Class of 2028 can feel the same. JazakAllah Khair for considering me!

Zainab Khan

My name is Zainab Khan and I am running for Freshmen Rep for UNC MSA. I am very interested in planning fun and educational activities and events for the Freshmen class. I think I am really fit for this position because I have had a lot of experience in the past with event coordination and I would love to take on this role for the new Freshmen class in MSA. Please vote Zainab Khan for Freshmen Rep!!!

Haroon Navaid

My name is Haroon Navaid and I am a pre-business major. I like cats and working out. I believe I am the right fit for the position because I was president of the MSA at my high school, so I have experience organizing events. I want to hold game nights (board games, video games, sports, etc), freshman socials (dinners, cultural events, etc) and other events!

Shuaa Omer

Alsalamu Alaykum! My name is Shuaa and I am a Mathematics BS major. I was involved in MSA in high school and would love to serve the Muslim community here at UNC! I moved from Raleigh, NC, and love to run, read, and bake in my free time. I love getting involved with the community around me. In high school, I served as BETA Club (a national service organization) President, NAHS (National Art Honor Society) Vice President and ASL (American Sign Language) Club Co-Founder and Co-President. I have also been a consistent volunteer at the Islamic Association of Raleigh, working in various positions from being an elementary school Quran tutor to working as an elementary and middle school girls Halaqa mentor. I have many ideas I would love to implement to make freshman year an amazing year, ranging from more first-year oriented events, opportunities to volunteer and find internships, and girls' fajr circles. I consider myself very driven and am committed to dedicating my time and energy to being an amazing first-year representative. I am very open to ideas and would love to work with all of the first years to build a supportive and engaging community. I would also be thrilled to work with the Shurah to make freshman year less stressful, memorable, and amazing overall! Please do not hesitate to say hi if you see me around campus and ask any questions!
