Sportsfest 2024

About

Sportsfest is an annual weekend charity sports tournament hosted by the UNC Muslim Students Association. Muslims across the East Coast play both flag football and basketball to compete for a title and good cause. This year, the tournament will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 and Sunday, February 4, 2024.

Registration information

  • Register as soon as possible as spots are limited. Participation will be on a first come, first serve basis. Once the registration deadline closes (Jan 15), we will email participation confirmation to the team captains.

  • Both men and women sports are not guaranteed unless enough interest is shown.

  • Only the team captain should fill out the registration form. The team captain has to sign the Team Captain Acknowledgement Form (sent after registration deadline). The team roster does not have to be finalized until Jan 28, same day payments are due.

  • After the registration deadline, ALL PLAYERS must sign:

VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for volunteers to help with set up, clean up, concessions, tournament brackets, score keeping, etc. If you are interested, please sign up using the link above.

We are also looking for individuals to contribute baked goods that can be sold at our concessions stand. The profits will go towards the selected charity.

Saturday February 3:

  • 8:30AM-6PM Hooker Fields (BOYS FLAG FOOTBALL)

  • 1PM-6PM Fetzer Gym A and B (GIRLS BASKETBALL)

Sunday February 4:

  • 11AM-6PM Hooker Fields (GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL)

  • 11AM-6PM Woollen Courts (BOYS BASKETBALL)

PARKING IS AVAILABLE AT THE SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT PARKING DECK ON SOUTH RD, NEXT TO HOOKER FIELDS

TOURNAMENT RULES

  • No obscene gestures, clothing, or signs will be permitted. Tournament organizers reserve the right to deem material unsuitable for the environment.

  • All players/participants must behave according to Islamic principles.

  • Fighting, taunting, cursing, smoking, drinking, etc. will not be tolerated.

  • All property, officials, referees, organizers, volunteers, etc. must be shown proper respect. Violators will be expelled from the tournament.

  • In cases of inclement weather, games will be shortened or cancelled at the discretion of Sportsfest organizers.

  • In accordance with intramural rules, D1 players cannot compete in the sport they are D1 in.

ABOUT WOMEN’S TEAMS

  • *Disclaimer: We cannot guarantee all-female referees, coaches, or athletic trainers. In addition, we cannot guarantee a closed-off court/field so do register with this knowledge in mind.

Check-in procedures

  • Teams must check in 30 minutes before their first game (schedule will be released after the registration deadline). If a player cannot make it to check in time, they must check in before the team's second game or they will not be allowed to participate.

  • A photo ID is required for check in.

  • ALL players must have signed and turned in all liability forms (will be sent out after registration closes).

TOURNAMENT SET-UP

  • Each team is allowed a MAXIMUM of 13 people on each individual sport roster and a combined roster of 20 people across both sport rosters.

  • Basketball teams need a MINIMUM of 7 people and Flag Football teams need a MINIMUM of 8 people.

  • Each team player MUST have a number on the back of their jersey. In honor of Deah Barakat, we retired the #30 and ask that teams do not use it.

  • Points for playoff seeding are awarded as follows:

    • 4 points: Shutout Win

    • 3 points: Win

    • 1 point: Tie

    • 0 points: Loss

  • Tie-breaking procedures for playoff seeding are as follows: (1) Points, (2) Point Differential, (3) Points For, (4) Points Against, (5) Sportsmanship Rating, (6) Coin Toss.

All game adhere to the rules set forth by UNC Campus Recreation. Please see the relevant sections in the manuals below for more information:

Payment

Participation in one sport is $250. Participation in both flag football and basketball is $350.

Payment must be made by January 28, 2023. Only one person from the team, preferably the team captain, should make the payment in one transaction. Registration is not final until payment is received. Payment options are Paypal or Venmo “UNCMSA”.

Number of Sports

The UNC Muslim Student Association reserves the right to amend any rules and regulations as deemed fit.
